Of Gloomy Artists and their essentials

Updated: May 10, 2021

Remember "Janardhan" from Rockstar, a college student in a worn-out sweater desperately seeking inspiration to make music, eventually leading him to torture and despair after a deadly heartbreak marking the beginning of a rebellious artist? Now that is how artists are perceived. Is it just me or does anyone else find it meh’?

For me, the tortured artist is a myth –Does one really have to be depressed to write songs? The last thing I want to do when I am down is paint (which is my thing if you aren’t aware of it), though it's important that you sometimes just sit down and get on with it, even if you’re not feeling any motivation and especially if it’s bringing meals to your table. Lol.

That being said, I also acknowledge the concept of "To each their own" but your imagination is like a tap, it refrains the water from flowing out, if you decide to not let it.

Of course, my whole journey to where I am today was no cake-walk. Reaching to anything that you dearly love and wish for is never an easy ride. There comes this so-called "inner voice", that does all the talking about how you're never gonna make it because you're not good enough.

Trust me, the day you learn to stand up to that voice of oppression, you're almost there.

But it's also about asking yourself these particular things-  “Why did I start this in the first place?”, and “What got me on this road?”

Well, for that you need to be your own critic and corrector.

This unusual attitude of mine trying to find inspiration begins anywhere and everywhere, from things rooted in our culture, peculiar people on the streets, random movies, mindful conversations to the patterns and paints of walls and, and whatnot. It's all about taking these little things in and building a perspective with a critical eye. The best way to end up at an idea is by filtering out the  “what not to do” rather than “what should be done”.

It all starts out at an average idea – something that a normal breathing human would miss. It is a cathartic feeling to be aware of the pride I feel today because of all the disappointing art I created once upon a time. I owe it all to my mistakes and my relentless mediocrity.

Hard work isn't always productive. Your brain does need periods of inactivity. At these times, It is very normal to be inspired by a film-maker, a fashion designer, a writer, or a  friend as another artist. Blending various artworks can sometimes be really fulfilling. It’s all about not restricting yourself to your own medium.

Don't wait for a good idea to come to you. Start by realising an average idea – no one has to see it. If I hadn't made the works I'm ashamed of, the ones I'm proud of wouldn't exist.

And well, to the people who come from the other side of the hill, the ones who function in distress, artistically speaking. I really can’t be a judge, your source of inspiration can be birthed only in sadness but what if it can actually be sought even otherwise, the only way to find it out is by trying, I guess.

It’s all in your head darling. So wait for the Yellow signal to turn Green and just take the leap of faith And just so that y’all know this is not just about painting on a canvas. ;)
